Laszlo Erkel, known as Kentaur, the costume designer of the London Coliseum production shared the story of the collaboration of the producers: “(This collaboration) is the outcome of a long process. Years ago, we travelled to London in preparation for the Hungarian production of We Will Rock You. We were discussing the licence with Phil McIntyre right holder. The discussion was successful, and because of this, we got the performing rights to present We Will Rock You for the Hungarian audience with the late Tibor Miklos` translated lyrics.”
“The collaboration was so successful that, at the Budapest stop of the Queen concert tour, they visited our ongoing rehearsals. Brian May, Jim Beach, and the whole management came to check on the progress. They were amazingly nice and opened and liked what we were doing. They even invited us to their concert the next day, in the Papp László Sport Arena, and organized a special reception for our Budapest company, where the Hungarian artists had the chance to meet with Roger Taylor and Brian May personally.”
“Later we prepared a design book for Brian May and Jim Beach with the set and costume designs I’ve created. Two years after the Hungarian premiere, as a result, We Will Rock You toured throughout Great Britain and Ireland with my costumes design. The director of this first UK tour was Cornelius Bartus, who staged the Hungarian performance. In 2021-22, in the same staging, the production toured Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Now we are staging the musical in the world-famous Ben Elton`s direction – who wrote the musical’s script alongside the Queen – in the West End at the Coliseum Theatre.”
